In a wildly popular 80's TV show, the Soko crew roamed Japan by bus taking a single camera into narrow alleyways, through tiny villages and down weed-choked roads- never failing to stumble upon the most marvelous things in the most innocuous places.
And so, to the spirit of curiosity and kismet.
"Translation is like channeling" said my workshop leader. "Though the interpreter draws on a wide knowledge base to decipher content, the challenge is to let go of ego, and to become the voice of whoever you're translating for. And you must do it instantaneously without thought."
But then again, she said all that in Japanese. Who knows what she REALLY said. I'm a work in progress.

The fledgling ethologist jumps off the walkway into the water, wading over slippery rocks to the sanctuary of the rare Chelonia mydas concreata. She carefully pulls herself up the sheer face of the volcanic boulder, and reverently pets the gentle giant on it's massive shell. The turtle smiles appreciatively.
